Tzatziki sauce is one of my favorite things about having Greek food. It’s thick and creamy, light and refreshing, and goes with just about anything. That is to say, I’m willing to put it on just about anything. To switch it up from my greek yogurt version, we are making avocado tzatziki instead!
Using avocado is absolutely delicious and makes this tzatziki dairy-free! The avocado adds some healthy fats, fiber, and other nutrients like potassium, vitamin C, and folate.
The key is using a high powdered blender (I love my Vitamix) to get a creamy and smooth texture. Other than that, it is made similarly to regular tzatziki.
Avocado tzatziki sauce highlights
- fresh and bright flavor
- super easy to make with only 6 ingredients
- very versatile – use it as a spread on sandwiches, as a creamy dressing for salads, veggie dip, dip for chips, as a “mayo” in chicken salad, or with your favorite Greek meals
- a fun and delicious dairy-free version of a classic dip to change it up
What is tzatziki?
Tzatziki, pronounced tsah-see-key, is a sauce found in the cuisines of the Middle East and Southeast Europe. It is traditionally made of yogurt mixed with cucumbers, garlic, extra virgin olive oil, lemon juice or vinegar, and herbs (dill and mint). Tzatziki is usually served at Greek restaurants with grilled meats, on a gyro, or as a dip with pita or veggies.
We are changing it up and making an avocado version instead of using greek yogurt.
Avocado tzatziki ingredients
- avocados
- lemon juice
- garlic
- red wine vinegar
- fresh dill
- cucumber
- salt and pepper
How to make avocado tzatziki dip
- Prep your cucumbers. Cut cucumbers in half and remove seeds with a spoon. Dice into small pieces. The size will depend on how chunky you want it, but I suggest 1/4-inch pieces.
- Blend avocados. Add the avocados, lemon juice, minced garlic cloves, red wine vinegar, and 2 tablespoons of dill to your blender or food processor and blend until smooth.
- Mix in the remaining ingredients. Add the avocado mixture to a medium bowl. Stir in diced cucumber and remaining dill, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Enjoy! Use it as a dip or sauce for your favorite Greek meal.
How to deseed a cucumber
Deseeding the cucumber helps keep the sauce thick as cucumbers have a lot of water, and leaving the seeds will water it down.
To deseed, cut cumber in half lengthwise. Then, using a spoon, scoop out the seeds. Then, you can just slice and dice the remaining pieces.
Blending vs mashing your avocados
I prefer blending my avocados to get a super creamy texture, while the diced cucumbers add some crunch. If you don’t have a blender or want it a little chunkier, feel free to mash your avocados with a fork until the desired consistency.
How to serve tzatziki
This homemade tzatziki is so versatile! We love keeping a jar in the fridge during the week and adding it to different meals. Here are some ways you can use it:
- salad dressing
- dip – great served with veggies, pita bread, pita chips, or tortilla chips
- with falafel
- with anything Greek – perfect for grilled greek chicken kabobs, greek lamb meatballs, greek chicken bowls, or greek chicken meatballs
- sauce for a grain or power bowl
- as a spread on a sandwich
- sauce with an easy dinner – we love serving this with some protein (chicken, steak, or seafood), some veggies, and carbs to spice up weeknight dinners
Storage
- refrigerator – store in a tightly sealed glass jar in the fridge. It will last up to 4 days, but the top might brown a little as the avocado is exposed to air (it will still be good though with a little mix!). If desired, you can cover with plastic wrap directly against the dip so it doesn’t brown as easily.
- freezer – I do not recommend freezing this.
