Come summer, all I want are fresh, light flavors. We also love cooking on the grill, not only for the flavor it adds to meals, but for not heating up the whole house using the oven or stovetop. And that’s what this greek turkey burger recipe comes in!

This recipe is a spin-off of my greek chicken meatballs, but in burger form. They are loaded with fresh herbs, spices, onion, and garlic, and grilled to juicy perfection! Once done, they are topped with homemade tzatziki, tomato, and onion to balance it out and bring the recipe together.

Is a turkey burger healthy?

Turkey burgers can be a healthy addition to one’s diet and offer a leaner, higher protein option compared to traditional beef burgers. Of course, with any burger, be mindful of your toppings if watching your calorie intake.

  • dried oregano
  • salt and pepper

A large bowl of raw ground turkey, crumbled feta cheese, diced red onion, chopped fresh herbs, minced garlic, spices, salt, and pepper before it is mixed. Next to the bowl is a small bowl of salt and pepper.

While the grill heats up, make burgers.

In a large bowl, mix the ground turkey, onion, feta, garlic, parsley, dill, dried oregano, and salt and pepper until well combined. Try not to overmix.

Raw turkey burger patties with onion, feta, and fresh herbs on a piece of parchment paper.

Form the meat into 4 equal-sized patties.

Use your hands to form a burger shape, with about one inch of thickness, and a small thumb-sized indent in the middle. This will help them cook evenly and not puff up. If going to grill, freeze for 10 minutes so they firm up.

Grill burgers.

Place turkey burger patties on the grill grates over direct heat and grill for 5-6 minutes per side, flipping once. While the burgers grill, prepare your toppings.

Top each burger with tzatziki sauce and serve in lettuce wraps or buns with additional toppings of choice.

Can you cook a turkey burger in the oven?

Yes, turkey burgers can be made in the oven if you don’t have a grill or don’t want to pan fry them. Once formed into patties, place on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and bake in a preheated oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for 20-25 minutes. They are done when the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

How to pan fry a turkey burger

Turkey burgers can be made on the stove if you don’t have a grill. Heat a large skillet over medium heat, adding oil if needed. Cook burgers for 5-6 minutes per side until golden brown and the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit.

What to put on a greek burger

What is a good burger without any toppings?! While I love a classic burger, you definitely need a few toppings to bring it all together. Here are a few suggestions:

  • tzatziki – I highly recommend whipping up a batch of homemade tzatziki in advance or while the burgers grill. All you need is greek yogurt, cucumber, dill, lemon juice, olive oil, and garlic. You can also use your favorite store bought as well.
  • lettuce
  • sliced tomato
  • cucumber slices
  • thinly sliced  red onion
  • roasted red peppers
  • crumbled feta

Storage and reheating

  • fridge – burgers will last 4 days in a tightly sealed dish in the refrigerator.
  • freezer – these burger patties can be frozen raw. Make them according to the directions and freeze them on a baking sheet. Store in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. Let them thaw in the fridge overnight and then cook according to directions.
  • reheating – to reheat leftover burgers, heat up a skillet, add your burger and a little water to the pan, and then place the lid on the pan and cook over medium heat until warmed through. You can also use the air fryer.

Substitutions and additions

Here are a few substitutions for these turkey feta burgers. I highly suggest using fresh herbs as it gives them so much flavor, but you can use dried ones if needed.

  • ground turkey – I suggest 93/7 as it is still lean but has some fat for flavor. Ground chicken or beef will all work well, but the flavor profile will change some.
  • red onion – white onion will work the same.
  • garlic – use 1 teaspoon of garlic powder instead.
  • fresh parsley – you can substitute 2 tablespoons of dried parsley for fresh.
  • dill – you can substitute 1 teaspoon of dried dill for fresh.

ingredients

Greek Turkey Burgers

  • 1 pound ground turkey (I used 93/7)
  • 1/2 cup diced red onion (60 grams)
  • 1/2 cup crumbled feta (2 ounces)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup parsley, chopped
  • 2 tablespoons dill, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • salt and pepper, to taste

For serving

  • tzatziki sauce
  • burger buns or lettuce wraps
  • for topping – lettuce, sliced tomato, red onion, sliced cucumber…

instructions

  • Heat the grill to medium-high heat.
  • While the grill heats up, make burgers. In a large bowl, mix the ground turkey, onion, feta, garlic, parsley, dill, dried oregano, and salt and pepper until well combined. Try not to overmix. If desired, let the meat mixture marinate for an hour or more. It gives the burgers even more flavor, but it isn’t necessary.
  • Form the meat into 4 equal-sized patties. Use your hands to form a burger shape, with about one inch of thickness, and a small thumb-sized indent in the middle. This will help them cook evenly and not puff up. If going to grill, place raw patties on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet or plate and freeze for 10 minutes so they firm up. If pan-frying, you do not need to freeze.
  • Grill burgers. Place turkey patties on the grill grates over direct heat and grill for 5-6 minutes per side, flipping once. While the burgers grill, prepare your toppings.
  • Enjoy! Top each burger with tzatziki sauce and serve in lettuce wraps or buns with additional toppings of choice.
