Hello to the easiest homemade peanut butter dog treats! And to Cashew’s new favorite treats! Cashew is our pup if you didn’t know 🙂

He is a little food-obsessed (just like his momma haha) and I’m a sucker for his big brown eyes. While we usually buy treats, I love making homemade treats for him for a few reasons:

  1. It’s a lot cheaper than store-bought
  2. I know exactly what is in them
  3. Nothing like a homemade treat to make you feel like a good mom!

A dog licking his licks while a homemade frozen dog treat is held out in front of him.

And these pumpkin peanut butter ones couldn’t be easier. We always have coconut oil and peanut butter in our house and I usually try to keep a can of pumpkin puree as well. All you need to do it mix it all up, freeze for a couple of hours, and voila, easy homemade dog treats.

One of my favorite treats to give Cashew is coconut oil – he absolutely loves it when I put it on top of his food or lets him lick the spoon when I’m making something. I love NOW Foods as it’s organic, unrefined, and cold-pressed, which helps preserve the nutrients when being processed.

3 ingredient pumpkin peanut butter dog treats

These frozen 3 ingredient dog treats couldn’t be any easier to make! All you need is pumpkin, peanut butter, and coconut oil, a silicone mold, and a couple of hours for them to come together. Easy to make, healthy, and your dog will love them.

Here is what you need:

  • pumpkin puree
  • peanut butter
  • coconut oil
  • cinnamon (optional)

A bowl of pumpkin, peanut butter, and coconut oil mixed together to make homemade dog treats.

Add all your ingredients to a medium-sized mixing bowl. Mix well until thoroughly combined. Then add a heaping tablespoon or so to your silicone molds. I used these dog bone ones, but any kind will work. The mixture will make 15 treats using the dog bone molds, but the amount will vary depending on what you use.

Finally, pop them in the freezer for 1-2 hours to firm up and that’s it! The easiest homemade peanut butter dog treats!

Since they are frozen, I let them sit out for a minute or two to soften up before giving them to my pup so they aren’t too cold. Sometimes I will cut one in half or thirds depending on how much I want to give him.

Tips for pumpkin peanut butter dog treats

While this recipe is very simple, there are a few things to do to make sure they come out great.

  • pumpkin puree – look for a canned pumpkin that is just pumpkin puree. You don’t want pumpkin pie mixture that thas added sugar or any preservatives. You can also use fresh pumpkin puree made from roasted pumpkin.
  • coconut oil – you want your coconut oil to be melted or softened so it can easily be incorporated when mixing
  • peanut butter – opt for all-natural peanut butter that is just peanuts or peanuts and salt. Again, you don’t want any additives, sugar, or preservatives. Natural peanut butter is also runny and it will be easiest to mix. You can use either creamy or crunchy peanut butter.

How to store homemade frozen dog treats

Since these are frozen dog treats, they do need to be stored in the freezer. Once they are frozen solid, you can remove them from the molds and store them in a bag for easy access (I love these reusable bags). Frozen dog treats can also be stored in the molds and then just pop them out when ready to give one to your dog.

  1. Hi, kelly. I have a question on the dog treats. Would I be able to substitute the pumpkin puree with some more coconut oil and peanut butter?

    1. Hey Ella! You could try, but it would just be a lot of peanut butter and coconut oil. I know think there is anything wrong with that though, but always good to check with your vet. They would probably be a little firmer when you take them out of the freezer, so I would let them soften up just a bit. You can also use mashed bananas. I have a similar recipe here – https://eatthegains.com/peanut-butter-banana-dog-treats/

OMG!! These are absolutely amazing! My Little Senior Bichon Frise has a LOT of taking pills. I already cut all of her pills in half and try to hide them in peanut butter, but she always manages to find the pill and spit it out. Since Ive been making these, it’s a BREEZE giving Sophie her pills (multiple times per day I might add). I make them into small bone-shape cookies, freeze them, and take out what I need during the day and allow them to thaw. They hold together wonderfully, but, when I need to “mush” them up to hide her pills it works like a charm. AND, better yet, she LOVES the taste and actually thinks Mom is being very generous with all these treats she gets throughout the day:). Had to leave this post to let others know these are perfect for disguising pills if you need to do that for your Furbaby!! Thank you sooooo much for sharing this wonderful recipe. This is a definite KEEPER!!

One More comment/question Kelly. I was wondering if I could cut back a tablespoon of Peanut Butter and add a tablespoon of natural honey? For some reason, my dog prefers “sweet” things. But if this will change the texture of the cookie do you have any other recommendation to make is sweet? Thank you again for such an awesome recipe!

        1. Hey Donna! Yes, that would be just fine! I don’t think it would change the texture that much at all and should still freeze up just fine. Hope that helps!

Made these for our sheltie, Brooklyn, she loved them. When back to the spot in the kitchen where she ate it and licked the tile. Super easy to make and healthy ingredients. Just bought bananas yesterday to make the other flavor.

Made these for my senior dog who has epilepsy. His neurologist recommended coconut oil twice daily but he hates coconut oil on its own. He loves these and I can sneak coconut oil into his daily routine!
