Out of everything you can do with cottage cheese, which by now we know there is A LOT, cottage cheese toast is one of my favorite ways to do it.

They make such a simple recipe, yet it is so delicious. The crunch of the toast, the creamy cottage cheese, and endless toppings you can use; it never gets old. Plus, it takes about 5-10 minutes to make.

Four pieces of cottage cheese on toast. One has smoked salmon and veggies on it. Another has peanut butter and honey on it. The third one has sliced tomato and balsamic on it. And the fourth one has avocado and chili oil on it.

I started making my peanut butter & honey combo a couple of years ago, and it quickly became my go-to preworkout snack. After sharing on Instagram, I was overwhelmed with comments and messages sharing other combos to make. I branched out a little, and these combos have become a staple in my rotation.

Whichever way you make them, they make a great option for a healthy and satisfying snack with a good balance of protein, carbs, and healthy fats. You can also customize them to meet your specific needs and preferences.

What is cottage cheese?

Cottage cheese is a dairy product made from cheese curds. It has a mild flavor and creamy texture, along with some chunkiness from the curds. It comes in different fat percentages (nonfat, reduced fat, or whole milk) and also different curd sizes (usually small or large).

Is cottage cheese healthy?

Cottage cheese is known for being a high-protein food while still being relatively low in calories. One cup of 2% fat has 180 calories with 24-28 grams of protein (depending on the brand), 11 grams of carbs, and 5 grams of fat. It also contains vitamins and minerals like B vitamins, calcium, phosphorus, and selenium. Cottage cheese can be a great addition if you are trying to add more protein to your diet.

Ingredients

  • peanut butter & honey combo – made with toast, cottage cheese, peanut butter, and honey.
  • avocado & chili oil combo – made with toast, cottage cheese, avocado, chili oil, and honey.
  • smoked salmon combo – made with toast, cottage cheese, smoked salmon, cucumber, red onion, dill, and everything but the bagel seasoning.
  • tomato & balsamic glaze combo – made with toast, cottage cheese, ripe tomatoes, balsamic glaze, fresh basil, and flaky sea salt.

How to make cottage cheese toast

  1. Toast sourdough bread to your liking.
  2. Make toast. Add cottage cheese to your toast and then top with the remaining toppings, depending on which version you choose. (See full directions in the recipe card below.)
  3. Enjoy!

Blend your cottage cheese!

If you are not a fan of the texture of cottage cheese, try blending it. It comes out smooth and creamy and is so good. It is similar to the texture of ricotta cheese. To blend it, add it to a blender or food processor and blend for 30 seconds until smooth. You could also use an immersion blender and blend it right in the container.

Substitutions and additions

  • sourdough – you can try sprouted bread, whole grain, or whole wheat bread if you like. Opt for gluten-free bread if needed.
  • cottage cheese – you can use fat-free, low-fat, or full-fat cottage cheese. Good culture is my favorite brand as I find it has the best taste and texture.
  • peanut butter – any nut butter will work. Try almond butter or cashew butter, or tahini for a nut-free option.
  • honey – maple syrup will work instead.
  • chili oil – hot sauce will work instead. You can also use hot honey instead of the chili oil and honey.
  • red onion – scallions will work instead.

Here are some additional toppings you can add to each one:

  • peanut butter & honey combo – try adding some fresh fruit or granola. Bananas, fresh strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, or peaches would all be delicious.
  • avocado & chili oil combo – try adding scrambled eggs or chopped hard-boiled eggs.
  • smoked salmon combo – try adding capers, sliced tomatoes, red pepper flakes, or a squeeze of lemon juice.
  • tomato & balsamic glaze combo – try adding a drizzle of olive oil.
